‘Check Before You Burn’ starts today

Air quality control officials are reminding Sacramento County residents that the season’s mandatory “Check Before You Burn” program starts today.

The law requires residents to find out whether it’s legal to burn in fireplaces and wood stoves. The season runs November through February. Burning will be restricted or banned during times of high air pollution. Violators will be fined up to $50 for the first offense. Subsequent fines are higher.

Residents can check the daily burn status by calling 1-877-NOBURN-5 (1-877-662-8765). To report a complaint or suspected violation, call the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District at 1-800-880-9025.

Call The Bee’s Richard Chang at (916) 321-1018. Follow him on Twitter @RichardYChang.
