Short speeches by candidates

Candidates running for office in Rancho Cordova will deliver three-minute “whistlestop” speeches during a luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at City Hall, 2729 Prospect Park. The Cordova Community Council and Rancho Cordova Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the event. Go to www.cityofranchocordova.org for more information.

Canned food drive celebration

A parade and block party to celebrate a three-month canned-food drive is planned at 11 a.m. at Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services, 1951 Bell Ave., Sacramento. HD Supply and more than 250 local apartment complexes started the food drive on July 15 and expect to collect more than 160,000 pounds of food by the time the drive ends next week, according to the food bank. The block party will feature a DJ and food truck.

Live music at The Barn

Friday Nights at The Barn features live music curated by Capital Public Radio’s Nick Brunner and takes place from 5 to 10 p.m. at the new venue, 985 Riverfront St., West Sacramento. Parade in Elk Grove

Elk Grove High School holds its homecoming parade from 1 to 2:45 p.m. on Elk Grove-Florin Road.
