Kudos to: Whitney High School

Accomplishment: Won First Amendment press freedom award

Details: Whitney High was honored for actively supporting, teaching and protecting First Amendment rights of students and teachers, with an emphasis on student-run media where students make the final decisions on content.

Kudos to: Temple B’nai Israel young people and others

Accomplishment: Made 1,000 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for distribution to Central Downtown Food Basket clients

Details: Elise Huggins’ fourth-grade religious school class made and wrapped 600 sandwiches. Others in the congregation made an additional 400. The sandwiches were distributed at two of the locations where CDFB distributes free food to low-income people. Temple B’nai Israel co-founded the Central Downtown Food Basket in 1983 and has been a steadfast supporter.

Kudos to: Sacramento Self-Help Housing

Accomplishment: Given a community service award from Downtown Sacramento Partnership

Details: SSHH was recognized for helping the homeless through its Cathedral Shelter program, Common Sense interim housing program and Serial Inebriate program. Joining the Downtown Sacramento Partnership Navigator Team, the Cathedral Shelter program has helped 500 people go from the streets into housing.
