Sacramento resident Joe Tolo reworked an old Bee Gees song to earn a place on the 8th season of “The Voice.”

Tolo, born in American Samoa, is one of eight children. Tolo, who hails from a musical family, was in nursing school when he submitted a video and made it to “The Voice” stage.

He sang a version of the Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody” during a blind audition in which the judges cannot see the singer. Tolo’s version started slowly and finished with a high note.

Judge Christina Aguilera was the first to turn her chair to face Tolo, an indication that she wanted the reality show contestant on her team.

Blake Shelton also turned his chair, but, in the end, Tolo chose to be on Team Aguilera. In the coming weeks, the contestants on all four of the judges’ teams will compete until the winner is finally chosen.

In an interview posted on the NBC website of “The Voice,” Tolo said he has been singing as long as he can remember.

“I remember I joined the church worship team when I was 13,” he said. “From that moment on I just started singing in front of people. I sing a cappella, I sing R&B, I sing soul.”

He called Aguilera a sweetheart and his selection a dream come true.
