West Sacramento selects Davis official as new fire chief

West Sacramento this week appointed as its new fire chief John Heilmann, a fire official for UC Davis and the city of Davis.

Heilmann, 46, returns to the city where he got his start in 1998, rising through the ranks in his 15 years as firefighter, engineer, captain and chief of the department’s training division.

He is currently serving as a deputy chief of operations for University of California, Davis and Davis fire departments. He helped form the West Valley Regional Fire Training Consortium, coordinating training for Davis, UC Davis, West Sacramento and Woodland.

Heilmann succeeds former West Sacramento fire chief Rick Martinez.

“John is a West Sacramento success story,” said West Sacramento City Manager Martin Tuttle in a statement. “He spent 15 years with the city fire department, became a leader at UC Davis, and we’re delighted to welcome him as our new fire chief.”

Heilmann’s first day on the job will be April 17.
