UPDATE: Travel over Donner Summit resumes after traffic halted due to hail

Interstate 80 over Donner Summit has reopened to traffic after hail prompted closures in both directions.

The California Highway patrol urged motorists traveling over the summit to use caution, warning that traffic is heavy and the roads are very wet and slushy.

Traffic was held in both directions for about 45 minutes due to heavy, accumulating hail and multiple traffic accidents. Travel over the summit resumed about 4:30 p.m.

The California Department of Transportation reported that big-rig jackknifed, and hail contributed to numerous spinouts and collisions.
