Kudos to: Shriners Hospitals for Children Northern California

Accomplishment: Named employer of the year by Sacramento City College for providing work experience for students

Details: For the past three years, the hospital has provided internships to Sacramento City College students studying to be technicians in heating, ventilation and air conditioning. The hospital has hired four interns to work in the engineering department.

Kudos to: Cordova Recreation and Park District

Accomplishment: Received award for outstanding new facility from state Association of Recreation and Park Districts

Details: The award was for the design of the 6.5-acre Sunridge Park. The park includes a playground with language panels that include Braille, a nature discovery playhouse, ramps for disabled visitors, music elements and art spaces.

Kudos to: Jennifer Shields, bus driver

Accomplishment: Named bus driver of the year in northern region by California Highway Patrol

Details: On Aug. 14, Shields was driving a bus for El Dorado Union High School District when a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction crossed into her lane. She took quick evasive action, preventing major injuries in a collision.
