Driver who exited vehicle killed in hit-and-run on Highway 50, CHP says
A male driver was killed in a hit-and-run collision early Wednesday morning after exiting his vehicle following two earlier crashes on Highway 50 in West Sacramento, according to California Highway Patrol.
CHP’s Woodland office said in a news release the incident involved three separate collisions, starting with a 2018 Maserati colliding with the center divider on westbound Highway 50 near Harbor Boulevard just before 2 a.m.
The disabled Maserati blocked the left lane of traffic and the driver exited the vehicle, standing in the center median. At that time, a 2006 Nissan Sentra driven by a 19-year-old Vacaville man struck the Maserati. The cause of these first two collisions was not clear, CHP said in a collision report.
Shortly after the second collision, another vehicle approached and “was able to avoid the vehicles stopped in the left lane by traveling onto the center median,” where the Maserati driver was standing, the news release said.
The third vehicle struck the pedestrian, then fled westbound on Highway 50, according to the release. CHP describes the suspect vehicle in the hit-and-run as a white car with dark wheels.
The Maserati driver succumbed to injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity will be released by the Yolo County Coroner’s Office pending notification of family.
The driver of the Nissan sustained minor injuries and was taken to UC Davis Medical Center.
Some lanes of westbound Highway 50 traffic at the Interstate 80 junction were closed by Caltrans early in the morning, but all lanes were open before 5 a.m.
