Mayor Darrell Steinberg to announce big waterfront plans Thursday at Old Sac event
Mayor Darrell Steinberg is set to announce big plans for the waterfront Thursday evening.
The announcement – set for 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Old Sacramento Waterfront embarcadero as part of a community event – could include spending millions of dollars on one or several big projects.
Steinberg helped broker a financing plan for the Sacramento Convention Center, Community Center Theater and Memorial Auditorium that freed up millions for the riverfront. That money could fund tourist attractions and amenities in Old Sacramento and sections of the river bank north of downtown, but no proposals have been formally announced.
“For decades, city leaders have realized that Old Sacramento needs a revamp to make it more relevant and appealing to residents and visitors,” a news release about the event read. “Mayor Darrell Steinberg Thursday will lay out a funded plan for making that happen.”
Steinberg’s proposal will also need City Council approval.
The announcement will take place during a free Gather Waterfront event, which is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The event will feature food trucks, dining tables, artisan booths, a kids’ play area, a live band and DJ. The event will be modeled after the popular “Gather” events held on the second Thursdays of each month in May through October.
The All About Sacramento Community Fund, the Downtown Sacramento Partnership and Visit Sacramento are funding Thursday’s event, according to the release.
