Highway 99 reopens as possible jumper surrenders voluntarily, CHP says
A person threatening to jump off a Highway 99 overpass surrendered voluntarily to authorities overnight without incident, California Highway Patrol officials said.
Both directions of Highway 99 have fully reopened after all lanes were closed at Mack Road starting about 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
The incident ended about 1 a.m. Friday, CHP South Sacramento said in a tweet.
Crisis team members with CHP, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department and Sacramento police communicated with the individual for nearly 10 hours.
Officials with Caltrans and CHP confirmed Thursday the roadway was closed due to a person threatening to jump from the Stockton Boulevard overpass.
The incident wrought havoc on afternoon commuters, with northbound traffic being diverted at Calvine Road and southbound traffic branching off at Mack Road. The congestion eased some by about 7 p.m., though the freeway remained closed.
“The California Highway Patrol recognizes this closure has caused a significant inconvenience for countless motorists, but the safety of the suicidal person, the officers at the scene, and the motoring public who travel on State Route 99 daily is our foremost concern,” CHP said in an earlier tweet.
