Howe Avenue near American River Drive closed as police investigate fatal car crash

The Sacramento Police Department closed the southbound lanes of Howe Avenue, near American River Drive, on Monday afternoon to investigate a fatal car crash, according to Marcus Basquez, a public information officer with the department.

Basquez said police received calls about the two-vehicle crash at 3:40 p.m. and arrived on scene with the Sacramento Fire Department, which transported the drivers to nearby hospitals. One of the drivers died before arriving at the hospital, according to Basquez.

The driver in one car was driving northbound on Howe Avenue and crossed into the southbound lanes, where it collided head-on with the other car, Basquez said. The driver of the car that crossed into the southbound lanes died.

The dead driver was female, according to Basquez. Sacramento police have not yet released other information about the drivers’ identities.
