Pedestrian outside of crosswalk fatally struck by minivan in south Sacramento, CHP says

A pedestrian was killed early Sunday morning in south Sacramento after being struck by a minivan, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers responded to a call just before 3 a.m. of a collision on Fruitridge Road near Nona Way, where a woman was found lying in the middle of the street, the CHP South Sacramento office said in a news release. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene by Sacramento Fire Department personnel, according to the news release.

The driver in the collision, a 24-year-old Sacramento woman, told officers she was heading west on Fruitridge Road in the fast lane in a Ford Windstar minivan when she changed lanes and “felt an impact,” the news release said. She then turned around and called 911, staying at the scene.

Investigators determined the pedestrian was walking outside of a marked crosswalk when she was struck by the Ford, the CHP says. It is not known if drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision, but the Ford driver was released from the scene.

The coroner’s office has identified the victim as Paulina Almeda of Sacramento.

Any potential witnesses to the incident are urged to contact the CHP South Sacramento office at 916-681-2300.
