Christmas is over. Here’s how Sacramento residents can get rid of their trees

Trying to figure out what to do with your Christmas tree?

City of Sacramento residents can dispose of trees by placing them in their yard waste containers or out in the street for pickup as part of the leaf collection service, according to a city blog post.

Trees placed in yard waste containers must fully fit in the bin with the lid closed, meaning some will have to be cut in to pieces, the post said.

Looking for an even easier way to dispose your tree?

Residents can also place trees out on the street for pickup as part of the city’s leaf collection service (aka “the Claw”).

If you’re choosing that option you have to act fast, though. The last day to place trees (or leaves) in the street for pickup is Jan. 26. To check when your pickup day is, visit the city website or call 311.

Trees placed in the street should not block water flowing to storm drains, and should not block bike lanes. People should clean all lights, tinsel, tree stands, nails and decorations from their trees before putting them on the street or in the bin. Flocked trees will also be accepted.

Trees can also be recycled at six Sacramento County facilities, and turned into mulch.
