SWAT deputies use tear gas to end three-hour standoff in Rancho Cordova after pursuit
A standoff in Rancho Cordova ended Tuesday morning after a man who led Sacramento Police on a pursuit from the Meadowview area of Sacramento surrendered to Sacramento County Sheriff’s SWAT deputies.
The standoff closed the intersection of Sunrise Boulevard and Douglas Road for about three hours early Tuesday, after a vehicle chase starting in south Sacramento ended at a gas station in the Sunridge Plaza shopping center with a suspect barricading himself in his vehicle, according to law enforcement agencies.
The suspect was identified as Cedric Rhym, 51.
The sheriff’s SWAT team used tear gas to force the man to surrender around 6:40 a.m., said sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Rod Grassmann. The standoff, in near-freezing temperatures at the Arco station, lasted more than three hours. Officials reopened the roads just before 7 a.m.
The vehicle, which appeared to be an SUV with one front tire gone and doors open, had stopped in a parking space in front of the entrance to the AM/PM attached to the Arco station. After the suspect was arrested and rest of the shopping center reopened, crime scene investigators with the Sacramento Police Department began examining the vacant vehicle. Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District and sheriff’s officials also remained at the scene.
The chase began before 2:30 a.m., according to Sacramento Police spokesman Officer Karl Chan, as a routine traffic stop near Meadowview Road and Freeport Boulevard. The man, who has not been identified but has a felony arrest warrant, led police on 30-minute chase through the county ending in Rancho Cordova.
When the chase stopped in front of the Arco station, the man behind the wheel refused to leave his vehicle. Sacramento police then turned the scene over to sheriff’s SWAT.
