SMUD outage in downtown Sacramento area leaves 2,500 customers in the dark

A SMUD power outage briefly affected thousands in the downtown Sacramento area Thursday evening.

The Sacramento Municipal Utility District reported the outage at 5 p.m., and more than 2,500 were without electricity. By 5:30 p.m., all but 465 customers, mainly in the midtown and Boulevard Park neighborhoods, were restored.

As of 6:45 p.m., the blackout had been lifted for all but a handful of customers.

SMUD spokesman Robert Tokunaga said the cause of the outage was unknown but personnel were on their way to determine the issue and restore power.
