Sacramento’s Greta Gerwig earns Oscar nomination for ‘Little Women.’ But was she snubbed?

Sacramento native Greta Gerwig has been nominated for the Academy Award for best adapted screenplay for her work on “Little Women,” which earned five other nominations.

“Little Women,” the most recent adaptation of the 1868 novel by Louisa May Alcott, is also up for best picture, best costume design, best original musical score, and best leading and supporting actress awards for Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh, respectively. The nominees for the Oscars were unveiled Monday morning ahead of next month’s awards show.

Ronan and Gerwig first collaborated on “Lady Bird,” a 2017 comedy-drama set in Sacramento, for Gerwig’s directorial debut. “Lady Bird” was nominated for five Oscars at the 90th Academy Awards – best picture, best actress for Ronan, best supporting actress for Laurie Metcalf, best original screenplay (Gerwig) and best director, but came up empty.

Several news outlets noted that Gerwig did not earn a best director nod this time around for “Little Women,” and a Washington Post headline called her absence a “snub.” All five directors nominated for best director are men.

“In terms of Greta, I’m happy that everybody is upset,” Pugh told Variety. “It’s great when you don’t need to point out the obvious. As Greta has said before, it’s been a great year for female creators and I hope this encourages a larger conversation. This is literally why Greta made the film — one about women living in a man’s world, related to money and success. This news only highlights the message of the film.”

In the adapted screenplay category, “Little Women” will be pitted against “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Joker” and “The Two Popes.”

Gerwig’s film is among nine nominees for “Best Picture.” The others are: “Ford v Ferrari,” “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Joker,” “Marriage Story,” “1917,” “Once upon a Time...in Hollywood” and “Parasite.”

The 92nd Academy Awards will be held Feb. 9, airing on ABC.
