1 dead, 2 seriously hurt after major head-on crash near Jackson Road, Metro Fire says

Fire personnel and the California Highway Patrol responded Wednesday morning to a multi-vehicle collision with one fatality and multiple other injuries, south of Rancho Cordova in east Sacramento County.

Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District tweeted just after 8 a.m. Wednesday that a “multi-vehicle/patient accident” on southbound Eagles Nest Road near Kiefer Boulevard was expected to create “extended” traffic delays in the area.

The coroner was dispatched to the scene around 9 a.m. for at least one fatality, according to the CHP incident log.

The crash was a head-on collision between two vehicles on Eagles Nest Road at about about 7:30 a.m., CHP’s East Sacramento Office said in a Facebook post. One of the vehicles’ drivers was killed, the post said.

Metro Fire spokesman Capt. Chris Vestal said the deceased victim was a female and the sole occupant of one of the vehicles. The other vehicle contained five passengers, all of whom were transported to a hospital. Three had minor injuries and two were “seriously” injured, Vestal said.

Vestal said investigators are still determining the cause of the crash, but that it appears that the vehicle that was heading northbound may have possibly crossed into southbound traffic while passing a slower-moving vehicle on the two-lane road.

The crash and investigation shut down both directions of Eagles Nest Road between Jackson Road and Kiefer Boulevard until just after 10 a.m., according to the CHP.

Eagles Nest Road connects Kiefer Boulevard with Grant Line Road in the Vineyard area.
