Driver hospitalized after train hits cargo van in south Sacramento, authorities say

A driver was seriously injured but is expected to survive after his van was struck by a train early Friday on Elder Creek Road in Sacramento, authorities said.

Police and fire personnel responded around 2:45 a.m. to the crossing at Elder Creek Road between Power Inn and Florin Perkins roads, where a white cargo van had been broadsided on the tracks by a Union Pacific train, company spokesman Tim McMahan said in an emailed statement.

Sacramento Police Department spokesman Officer Karl Chan said the solo occupant of the van suffered “non-life-threatening injuries” and is in stable condition.

The occupant had to be extricated from the vehicle, Sacramento Fire Department spokesman Capt. Keith Wade said. McMahan said no one on the train was harmed.

Vehicle traffic has since reopened in the area, according to Chan.
