Sacramento woman among 3 killed in Highway 160 crash along Delta, CHP says
Three people were killed in a two-vehicle crash Monday evening on Highway 160 along the Delta in south Sacramento County, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A 2017 Toyota Tundra driven by a 23-year-old Antioch man was traveling about 55 mph on southbound Highway 160 near West Sherman Island Road, and a 2001 Saturn sedan driven by a 27-year-old Sacramento woman was heading northbound at about the same speed shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday, according to a news release by the CHP South Sacramento office.
Witnesses reported the Saturn suddenly swerved into southbound traffic, then back to the right side of the road, and then back into oncoming traffic in front of the pickup truck, the news release said.
The Toyota braked but could not avoid broadsiding the Saturn, according to the CHP. Both vehicles then hit the rail on the west side of the roadway.
All three occupants of the sedan suffered fatal injuries. The victims included the 27-year-old woman from Sacramento who was driving, a 26-year-old man from Antioch and a male of unknown age, also an Antioch resident. According to the collision report, the driver and passenger of unknown age were wearing seat belts; the 26-year-old man was not.
The driver of the pickup truck and a 30-year-old man in the passenger seat each suffered minor injuries from the crash and were taken to a hospital.
The CHP believes alcohol and/or drug use were a factor in the collision, but the Toyota driver was not arrested.
Photos posted to Facebook by the CHP showed the Toyota pickup truck with its front-end smashed in, and the yellow Saturn sedan completely mangled.
The victims’ identities will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office pending notification of family.
