Two dead, two with major injuries after head-on crash in Citrus Heights, police say

Two people died and two others were seriously injured in a head-on crash Thursday night in Citrus Heights, police said.

The Citrus Heights Police Department received multiple 911 calls shortly after 8:15 p.m. reporting a two-vehicle collision near Auburn Boulevard and Charwood Lane, according to a department news release.

Arriving officers discovered an SUV and a truck in the roadway, each with major damage.

Two involved occupants were pronounced dead at the scene, the news release said, and two others were taken to local hospitals with “major” injuries but are expected to survive.

Based on initial investigation, police believe an SUV heading westbound on Auburn Boulevard crossed over the center divider and collided head-on with a truck on the eastbound side.

“We are early in our investigation, but it appears that speed may have been a factor,” the police news release said, though it was not specified which of the two vehicles was thought to be speeding.

Identification of the deceased victims will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office pending notification of family.

The Citrus Heights Police Department asks any potential witnesses of the collision to contact the department at 916-727-5500.
