Protesters smash windows of Main Jail in downtown Sacramento

Several protesters shattered the glass doors of the Sacramento County Main Jail Saturday afternoon, apparently kicking the doors with their feet and hitting them with a skateboard as deputies inside the building looked on.

The group, who donned ski masks, were part of larger group of demonstrators protesting the police killing of George Floyd who were marching at the time, about 4:20 p.m., on I Street, after spending much of the day outside the state Capitol building where they faced off against rows of California Highway Patrol officers.

The vandalism at the jail appears to be the most serious physical damage done during a day of tense, but largely peaceful, demonstrations.

Graffiti was sprayed on the wall next to the jail door reading “KILL ALL PIGS.” Another message read “There is no such thing as a good cop.”

Some of the protest crowd, which reached an estimated 1,000 at its peak, spray-painted bridges and downtown buildings as they marched, many of them insults toward police officers.

The incidents have caused rifts in the crowd at times. Some in the nearby crowd cheered as the young men broke the doors, and some shouted for the young men to stop.
