4 firefighters injured as 5-alarm fire contained but still burning in south Sacramento

A massive commercial fire in a south Sacramento industrial area continued to burn Tuesday morning after nearly 10 hours ablaze as Sacramento Fire Department officials investigated its cause.

The fire, which began just after 9 p.m. Monday, destroyed or severely damaged four buildings, Sacramento fire department spokesman Capt. Keith Wade said.

The fire, which had engulfed a pallet yard, was still burning as of 8 a.m., but was contained, Wade said.

The fire reached five alarms overnight and more than 200 firefighters responded, including personnel from Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, Cosumnes Community Services District Fire Department and West Sacramento Fire Department, officials said. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office also assisted in the incident.

Four firefighters suffered minor injuries, and one was taken to the hospital for care, a social media post by the department said.

Water pressure was a major challenge throughout the night, officials said.

“Challenges with water pressure in the area made the firefight extremely difficult,” an SFD tweet said. “Firefighters had to accomplish laying supply line extended distances north of 47th Ave to ensure adequate water pressure.”

The site also contained a large propane tank, which created a concern for possible explosion.

The fire is located in an industrial area near 47th Avenue and Franklin Boulevard, south of the old Campbell’s Soup plant. That area is unincorporated Sacramento County. Crews had to lay extended supply line to access a fire hydrant on the city water grid that would provide enough water pressure.

The department is asking anyone with information to contact the arson tip line at 916-808-8732.
