A few of Sacramento’s major cineplexes will reopen July 3 following their lengthy coronavirus intermission.

Cinemark Holdings Inc., the largest movie theater operator in the Sacramento area, said Wednesday it will reopen three of its major cineplexes in the area July 3: Century Arden 14, Century 16 Greenback and Century Laguna 16. The company’s five-screen cineplex in Woodland will also open that day.

The chain’s remaining Sacramento theaters will reopen July 10: Century DOCO in downtown Sacramento, Century Roseville 14 and Century Folsom 14.

July 10 is also the reopening date for all Regal Cinemas’ theaters, including Delta Shores, Natomas Marketplace and Laguna Village.

Movie theaters in Sacramento County could have legally reopened last Friday, but the theater chains are proceeding cautiously.

All theaters are reopening with limited seating capacity, as dictated by Gov. Gavin Newsom’s protocols for resuming economic activity while halting the spread of COVID-19.

With the coronavirus pandemic scrambling Hollywood’s plans for releasing new shows, Cinemark is going with older movies for the time being, including “The Matrix,” “Back to the Future” and “Sonic the Hedgehog.” New summer blockbusters will come later. The chain said tickets for the old movies will be sold at cut-rate prices of $5 for adults and $3 for children.

As for the smaller theater chains, the Tower Theatre’s website says it will begin showing movies July 1. The IMAX chain hasn’t announced a reopening date.
