Coronavirus outbreak reported at Davis skilled nursing facility, Yolo County officials say

Yolo County officials Friday afternoon announced a coronavirus outbreak at a skilled nursing facility in Davis, where six residents and four employees have tested positive.

Courtyard Healthcare Center reported its first confirmed infection June 12, when a resident at the facility on East 8th Street tested positive.

The facility is now among six long-term care facilities in Yolo County with outbreaks — resulting in a total of 112 people (58 residents and 54 employees) who are infected.

Among those infected at the long-term care facilities with outbreaks, 20 people have died due to complications from COVID-19.

Woodland’s Stollwood Convalescant alone has reported 17 deaths. No deaths have been reported at Courtyard Healthcare Center, according to Yolo County public health data available online.

As of July 19, Courtyard Healthcare Center had reported infections in four residents and three staff members. County officials said in a news release Friday that four people at the Davis facility, three residents and one employee, have tested positive within the past two weeks.

All residents and employees at the Davis facility have been tested for COVID-19 and are routinely monitored for symptoms, according to the county news release. Officials said residents and their families have been notified of the outbreak.

There have been 216 people tested for COVID-19 at Courtyard Healthcare Center, according to the county’s coronavirus dashboard. The county also reports that none of the residents or employees of the Davis facility who are infected have been hospitalized. The facility has 112 beds and also offers physical therapy and rehabilitation services.

The Davis facility has implemented measures to help prevent further spread of COVID-19, county officials said in the news release. Those preventative measures include:

  • Areas to properly put on and remove personal protective equipment.
  • Isolation and quarantine units with barriers and signs.
  • Adjusting air conditioning flows to prevent cross contamination.

  • Assigning staff to each isolation and quarantine unit.

  • Sufficient supplies and training for personal protective equipment.

  • Contact investigations as needed.

  • Screening employees for symptoms before each work shift.

  • Walking through the facility to improve physical distancing.

  • Increasing disinfection techniques.

  • Restricting all facility visitors, including vendors, until further notice.

Shortly after reporting its first confirmed cases of the virus, Courtyard Healthcare Center has said it designated wings of its facility for those who may test positive for COVID-19 and created a separate “observation unit” where newly admitted patients can be “quarantined, tested and closely monitored” for COVID-19 symptoms before being assigned to a standard room.

There were 41 new COVID-19 cases reported in Yolo County on Friday, after the county reported 51 new cases Thursday. The county has reported 1,315 cases and 37 deaths since the pandemic started.
