Placer County’s courthouses are closing at 3 p.m. Tuesday for a second day as an oppressive heat wave continues to bear down on the Sacramento region and as Gov. Newsom warned that power could shut down across the state as early as 3 p.m.

Courts officials issued the notice just before 2 p.m., citing warnings of excessive heat and the need to reduce energy use.

Those who have court hearings scheduled must still appear, officials said. Court hearings are not being canceled. The courts’ main telephone line, 916-408-6000, will also close at 3 p.m.

The prolonged heat wave that has gripped California and taxed the state’s power grid has forced rolling power blackouts in California.

Sacramento Superior Court will remain open. Officials there said they plan to take other power conserving measures to remain operating.
