1 killed, 3 hurt in 9-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 near Florin Road in Sacramento, CHP says

A driver was killed and three others were injured after a crash Tuesday evening involving nine vehicles including a tractor-trailer on Interstate 5 in the Pocket section of Sacramento.

The crash was initially reported about 5 p.m., prompting the shutdown of southbound lanes near the Florin Road exit, said Officer Jim Young, spokesman for the CHP’s South Sacramento Office.

Officers initially determined that the big-rig, hauling plywood, had rear-ended a black BMW stationwagon, a white Kia sedan and a red Chrysler 300 sedan at speed, as the mass of vehicles continued toward other vehicles ahead of it. Young said a man in his 30s driving the Chrysler was pronounced dead at the scene. The big-rig driver was not injured, Young said.

At least one witness told officers that a vehicle was spotted speeding recklessly before the crash. Young said he was aware of the witness statement, but officers were trying to determine whether that vehicle was involved in the crash.

Officers do not suspect alcohol or drugs to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation, Young said.

Traffic was delayed following the crash as motorists were directed off the freeway at Florin, causing back-ups for several miles. Lanes reopened around 10 p.m.
