Applause for the week of June 22, 2015
Kudos to: Grace McDonald and Hannah Mackenzie, Spring View Middle School students
Accomplishment: Won first place in the junior group website category in the National History Day competition
Details: Each year 500,000 students conduct primary and secondary research, interview subjects and delve into library material to compete in the National History Day contest. Grace and Hannah won for their entry about pioneer American aviator Jacqueline Cochran.
Kudos to: Organ and tissue donors
Accomplishment: Their generosity is noted with a memorial rock at UC Davis Medical Center
Details: The parents of Scott Santana, who at age 17 became an organ donor after his death in a car accident, led the acquisition of a nearly 2-ton memorial rock to honor organ and tissue donors in the Sacramento region.
Kudos to: Nine members of the Sacramento-based AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps
Accomplishment: Helping the people of Manville and Lusk, Wyo., who were hit hard by flash floods
Details: No lives were lost, but about 100 homes and businesses sustained damage. Crew members are mucking out flooded homes. When the AmeriCorps members return to Sacramento, they will graduate from their 10-month term of service.
