Traffic delays this weekend in Sacramento as Caltrans closes highway ramps for 56 hours

Drivers in downtown, Midtown and East Sacramento should expect traffic delays this weekend as Caltrans closes some ramps to Capital City Freeway and Highway 50 for 56 hours.

The ramp closures are necessary for crews to safely improve a bridge deck, according to a news release from the California Department of Transportation. The road work includes grinding and paving operations and replacing the joint header on the bridge deck.

Crews will close the on-ramp from N Street to southbound Capital City Freeway/Business 80, also known as State Route 51, along with the connector ramps from southbound Capital City Freeway/Business 80 to westbound and eastbound Highway 50.

Caltrans said the ramps and the left turning lane on N and 29th streets leading to the on-ramp are scheduled to be closed from 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday.

The speed limit through the construction zone has been reduced to 55 mph, and the California Highway Patrol will be patrolling the area and looking for speeding vehicles, according to Caltrans.

Drivers in East Sacramento coming from Cal Expo or the Arden Arcade area also should expect traffic delays this weekend. Caltrans encouraged drivers to plan ahead and consider alternate transportation, such as the Sacramento Regional Transit light rail service.

The road work is part of a $4.5 million project to improve state highways at locations along Highway 50, State Route 51, Interstate 80 and Highway 99 in Sacramento, Placer and Butte counties to fix California’s aging roads and reduce wet-weather related crashes.
