Pedestrian killed by Amtrak train near Interstate 80 in West Sacramento, police say

Pedestrian fatality

An Amtrak Capitol Corridor train struck and killed a pedestrian Sunday evening in West Sacramento.

Amtrak staff called 911 around 8 p.m. to report an incident near Commerce and Northport drives, the West Sacramento Police Department said in a news release, along Interstate 80 between West Capitol and Reed avenues.

Officers located a deceased male at the scene, according to the news release, and determined he was struck by a train. Police said the man was struck in an area enclosed by fencing “not intended for pedestrian use.”

The victim will be identified by the Yolo County Coroner’s Office pending notification of family.

The incident involved Amtrak Train 742, heading east from San Jose to Sacramento, Amtrak spokeswoman Olivia Irvin said in an emailed response. No one aboard the train was injured.

The fatality delayed Train 742 by about three hours, according to Irvin. Trains 751 and 746 were also delayed by about an hour and by about 45 minutes, respectively.
