Update: Interstate 5 reopens in Sacramento after crash and big rig fire at I-80 junction

Traffic Alert

A crash and ensuing semitruck fire shut down southbound Interstate 5 at the Interstate 80 junction in Sacramento for several hours Tuesday morning.

The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. and involved a wrong-way driver colliding with a big rig, according to the California Highway Patrol’s incident log. The big rig then became “fully engulfed” in flames, prompting the closure.

Lanes reopened shortly after 7:30 a.m., according to the CHP, which advised that the roadway will be slick in the area and that motorcyclists in particular should use extra caution.

The incident backed up southbound I-5 traffic through North Natomas.

No other details, including possible injuries or fatalities, were immediately available.
