Frost advisory issued for Sacramento Valley as cold air invades Northern California

The National Weather Service issued a frost advisory for the Sacramento area that will remain in effect through Friday morning as cold air invades California’s Central Valley.

A clearing sky Thursday night will allow overnight temperatures to dip to frigid levels from the upper 20s to lower 30s with expected widespread frost formation, especially in outlying areas in the region, the weather service said.

The frost advisory, which is in effect from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. Friday, was issued for Sacramento Valley, the Delta, the Northern San Joaquin Valley and the adjacent foothills.

The temperature was expected to reach 35 degrees overnight in Sacramento, according to the weather service forecast. The overnight temperatures were expected be the same Friday night and in the mid-40s through the rest of the weekend.

The city of Sacramento is opening two warming centers for two nights this weekend for thousands of homeless people sleeping outdoors. The two facilities will provide a warm place to stay with snacks, water and restroom facilities, the city said.

The City Hall Lobby, at 915 I St., will be open overnight Thursday and Friday from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m., according to a news release. The Hagginwood Community Center, 3271 Marysville Blvd., will also be open during those hours.

The weather service urged residents to make sure outdoor pets have shelter from the cold and warned that frost could kill sensitive outdoor vegetation if left uncovered.
