Driver dies in Rancho Cordova after crash into tree along Sunrise Boulevard

Roadway fatality

A man died Monday night after his vehicle struck a tree along Sunrise Boulevard in Rancho Cordova.

About 7:30 p.m., witnesses called authorities to report a vehicle had struck a tree along the southbound lanes of Sunrise Boulevard, just north of Douglas Road, according to a Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office news release. Rancho Cordova police officers and sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene.

Officers arrived and found the vehicle that had “sustained catastrophic damage,” sheriff’s officials said. The vehicle’s driver, a man, was inside. The driver had to be extricated from the vehicle, the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District said in a tweet shortly after 8 p.m.

Metro fire medics pronounced the man dead at the scene, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the man’s name after his family has been properly notified.

Sheriff’s officials said there was no indication any other people or vehicles were involved in the fatal crash, but investigators had not yet determined the cause.

Roads in the area were wet as rain fell throughout Monday’s storm.

Investigators asked anyone who witnessed the crash or the man’s driving behavior before the crash to call the Rancho Cordova Police Traffic Unit at 916-875-9623 or the Sheriff’s Office at 916-874-5115.
