Driver arrested on suspicion of DUI in wrong-way crash that killed Roseville man

Roadway fatality

A Roseville man was killed and a Carmichael man seriously injured in a head-on crash Wednesday night on Highway 65 near Roseville involving a wrong-way driver, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The Carmichael man, identified by the CHP as Arturo Garcia, 34, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of a controlled substance.

The incident happened shortly after 10 p.m. on Highway 65 near Pleasant Grove Boulevard, where officers said a white 2015 Subaru Impreza driven by Garcia was traveling the wrong way in the center divide area of the southbound side, the CHP’s Auburn office said in a news release.

The Subaru “suddenly swerved left from the center divide” and into the fast lane of southbound traffic, crashing head-on into a 1994 Toyota Corolla.

The Toyota driver, a 39-year-old man from Roseville, suffered fatal injuries and died at a hospital. The CHP said he did not appear to be wearing a seat belt.

Officers arrested Garcia on suspicion of DUI. He remains hospitalized with injuries described as major, according to the CHP collision report.

A third vehicle was struck by debris from the crash, but its driver was not injured, the CHP said.

The deceased victim will be identified by the Placer County Coroner’s Office pending notification of family.
