Today in Sacramento: Here’s what you need to know for July 1

A hot day no matter the location

If heading up-valley on Wednesday be warned that an excessive heat advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service for communities such as Redding and Red Bluff where it is supposed to be 114 degrees this afternoon. It will be cooler in Sacramento, but still exceptionally hot: 107 degrees is forecast.

New president starts at CSUS

Robert S. Nelsen begins his presidency at Sacramento State, and he has a full slate of activities scheduled for his first day on the job. Nelsen is expected to meet with students, state legislators, reporters and alumni. Nelsen replaces Alexander Gonzalez, who retired from the post after 12 years.

Twin Rivers trustees look ahead

Twin Rivers Unified School District trustees will hold a board workshop at 5 p.m. to hear staff and consultants talk about the progress of the district’s long-range facilities master plan. At the regular meeting, at 7 p.m., the board will elect a president, vice president and clerk, as well as a representative to the Sacramento County School Boards Association. The meeting is at district headquarters, 5115 Dudley Blvd. in McClellan.

Another Spare the Air day

The Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District has declared the second straight Spare The Air day. A 129 air-quality index level is forecast, considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. The district recommends cutting back on driving and postponing errands.

Dedication of rodeo park

Folsom will dedicate Digger and Sharon Williams Rodeo Park at 9 a.m. Jim “Digger” Williams died last year, and the couple have been well known for their volunteer work in the community. The park is at 200 Stafford St.

  • Food Truck Mania comes to Old Town Elk Grove from 5 to 8 p.m. at Elk Grove Boulevard and Railroad Avenue.
  • Storycard Theater authors Hazuki Kataoka and David Battino introduce the Japanese storytelling format kamishibai, or paper theater. The event takes place at Orangevale Library, 3:30 p.m., 8820 Greenback Lane, Suite L, Orangevale.

Local sports

  • Sacramento River Cats vs. Salt Lake Bees, 7:05 p.m., Raley Field.
