Not only does the ban block 80 million Russian users from communicating with each other, but it also cuts ties with users from countries around the world. In addition to sharing photos and videos, the messaging feature of Instagram is commonly used for users to send private messages to one another.

CEO of Instagram Adam Mosseri spoke out against the ban Friday:

While there are still ways to log into Instagram using VPNs and other third-party apps, the ban makes it harder to reach users based in Russia.
