Two horses died and one person was injured after a pair of vehicles collided with a group of escaped horses Wednesday morning in Rio Linda, authorities said.

Crews responded shortly after 5 a.m. to Dry Creek Road near Elkhorn Boulevard, where an incident took place involving two vehicles and “multiple horses that had freed themselves from a property,” the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District said in a social media post.

One person was transported to a hospital, and two horses were found dead, Metro Fire wrote.

The incident involved two separate collisions, according to the California Highway Patrol’s online activity log, each killing a horse.

The injured occupant in one vehicle had injuries described as minor, and occupants of the other vehicle were uninjured, according to the CHP log.

It was not immediately clear how many horses escaped the property, or whether any surviving horses were still on the loose.
