This popular state park in Sacramento County is closing next month. Here’s what to know
Brannan Island State Recreation Area, located south of Rio Vista, will be closing on April 1 until further notice, California State Parks announced Thursday.
American Land and Leisure, a recreation management company, has been working with the agency to operate Brannan Island since 2013, but will be ending operations this April.
According to the notice, it does not have the resources to keep the area open and is currently looking for a new park operator.
Brannan Island, known for its waterways that travel through the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and its islands and marshes, is home to wildlife and offers recreational activities, such as boating and swimming. Just northeast of the San Francisco Bay, on Highway 160, visitors could previously make reservations at the park to camp or lodge.
If you had made a reservation at Brannan Island for after April 1, the state’s reservation system will contact you via email regarding refunds.
Sacramento County has other recreational areas where you can enjoy nature and the outdoors. This includes Folsom Lake State Recreation Area and Colusa-Sacramento River State Recreation Area. Before heading out, be sure to research the area and check its hours of operation.
