Sacramento woman, 25, killed in early-morning crash on Highway 50 near 59th Street

Roadway fatality

A Sacramento woman was killed and another suffered minor injuries after a pair of crashes early Thursday morning on Highway 50 in East Sacramento.

The initial collision involved a Subaru SUV driven by a 25-year-old Sacramento woman, which veered to the right and crashed into attenuator barriers at the eastbound 59th Street off-ramp just before 4:15 a.m., the California Highway Patrol’s South Sacramento office said in a Facebook post.

The Subaru “overturned and came to rest upside down” in the far right lane of traffic, CHP officials wrote. Minutes later, a Volkswagen SUV driven by a 56-year-old Sacramento woman crashed into the overturned Subaru at an unknown speed, authorities said.

The 25-year-old woman died at the scene, and was identified Friday by the Coroner’s Office as Isabelle Cassio, 25, of Folsom. The Volkswagen driver was taken to a hospital for injuries described as minor.

The CHP said it is unknown whether alcohol or drug use were factors in the incident, which remains under investigation.

All eastbound lanes of Highway 50 were initially blocked at 59th Street. One lane reopened around 5:30 a.m., a second opened around 7:30 a.m. and all remaining lanes were cleared shortly after 7:45 a.m. Caltrans said in tweets.

Caltrans traffic cameras showed congestion backed up onto the W-X corridor as of that time, with residual delays from the lane closures. Traffic also remained slow on northbound Highway 99, south of the junction to Highway 50.
