Watch the return of hundreds of goats on fire-prevention duty in West Sacramento

A 400-goat herd is reporting to duty in West Sacramento to clear high weeds and grass to prevent wildfires.

Video posted Wednesday on the City of West Sacramento’s Facebook page shows the herd crossing Jefferson Boulevard at Locks Drive near the Sacramento River.

The goats are returning as part of a program run by West Sacramento, which says they can clear about two acres of brush per day, in an environmentally friendly manner. Elk Grove and other Sacramento area cities also have similar programs.

People like hiring goats not only because they provide a natural, eco-friendly alternative to pesticides, but they can also tackle terrain that heavy machinery cannot.

“No “kidding” around ... the herd is hard at work helping clear out long grass and weeds in hard to reach areas around the city,” West Sacramento wrote in a blog.
