Lockdowns lifted as El Dorado deputies investigate reports of explosion near Union Mine

A lockdown has lifted at two El Dorado County schools after two explosions were heard Thursday afternoon.

The Sheriff’s Office reported that the sound of two explosions or gunfire was heard in the area of Union Mine High School in El Dorado just after 2 p.m. Deputies responded to the area and investigated the disturbance for about two hours, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The lockdowns were were lifted and students were released from Union Mine and Charles F. Brown Elementary School, a few blocks north, just after 4 p.m.

“There have been no reports of any injured persons related to this incident,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a subsequent update on social media. “EDSO is still in the area investigating the origin of the reported explosion, and/or gunshots in the area. Several witnesses believed the sounds or shots heard came from an area off of the school campus.”

A call and message to the Sheriff’s Office were not immediately returned Thursday afternoon.
