Step by step, 343 firefighters climbed 110 floors at the Renaissance Tower at 801 K St. on Thursday, to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack at ground zero.
Climb participants placed the name of a fallen firefighter over their own name on the back of their turnout coats before heading up the stairs. Firefighters, who were mostly from Northern California, climbed the building’s steps four times to complete the task.
After the climb, the names of the fallen were placed at a rooftop memorial. The annual event honors the 343 firefighters of the New York City Fire Department who died at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.
Proceeds from the climb benefit the FDNY Widows and Children’s Fund. At the 9-11 Memorial Flag Tribute in West Sacramento on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2014 , a tribute done annually by John Vinson and his friends and family on an empty lot.
