A Placer County sheriff’s deputy was involved in a shooting Thursday north of Auburn.

A spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office said the shooting happened around 11:30 a.m. following a domestic disturbance on the 12000 block of Griffin Way near Freeman Circle in the Elders Corner area.

There was an exchange of gunfire after an off-duty deputy arrived at the scene and made contact with a man, said spokeswoman Angela Musallam. She told reporters she did not have any information about what circumstances immediately led to the shooting.

The man was wounded and taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries, Musallam said, adding “we don’t know his condition at this point.”

The deputy was not injured, Musallam said.

She said several more people who were at the scene were detained for questioning “while we continue this investigation and determine the series of events that may have occurred.”

Authorities closed Griffin Way at Dry Creek Road. Some residents who live along the street were allowed to return to their homes. Other residents were stopped from returning, presumably because their homes are in close proximity to the shooting scene.

Musallam said the area was closed to allow detectives enough space to continue their investigation. She expected investigators to be out there for several more hours.

Investigators from the Placer County District Attorney’s Office were at the shooting scene Thursday afternoon. The District Attorney’s Office will be investigating the shooting, as well as the sheriff’s Professional Standards Unit.

Investigators believe there are no other suspects involved in this shooting.

“Because there are no outstanding suspects at this time, we believe that the neighborhood is safe and that nobody in the area should be worried of any outstanding danger,” Musallam said.

CORRECTION: This story has been updated to reflect that the deputy was not the only person who fired a weapon. The story was also revised to reflect that Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Angela Musallam did not say she did not know whether the deputy was struck by gunfire.
