Sacramento election results: Patrick Kennedy leading in race for his seat on Board of Supervisors

District 2 incumbent Patrick Kennedy held a commanding lead in his bid for re-election as Sacramento County Supervisor as polls closed Tuesday night.

Kennedy had 78% of the vote and looked to cruise to a third term. Cooney, a public policy associate and political newcomer in his first campaign, has 22%. Write-in candidate Jared L. Birdsall gathered seven votes in early tallies.

Kennedy will likely return to the dais representing the economically and racially diverse district which stretches from Pocket/Greenhaven east to Meadowview and into Elk Grove.

Cooney’s door-knocking campaign hoped to draw District 2 voters to the polls with the promise of change and new attention paid to the district’s oft-neglected south Sacramento neighborhoods.

Like south county District 5 candidate Jaclyn Moreno, south Sacramento’s Cooney has called for a regional plan to confront Sacramento County’s homelessness crisis through a public health lens and environmental protections for residents in a heavy-traffic district crisscrossed with highways and major thoroughfares who are left to shoulder pollution’s long-term health effects.

Cooney, who tacked to the left of incumbent Kennedy, would have been the only openly gay member on the county board and, at 29, its youngest supervisor in decades in a county where the median age is 37.

Kennedy tucked away key endorsements and campaign cash, but also asked voters to consider his record and the work he says he still wants to push across the finish line — a community review panel to provide oversight of the Sheriff’s Office; and work on more affordable housing projects in the county.
