West Sacramento residents will have to follow these new regulations to curb water use
Residents of West Sacramento must now permanently adhere to a watering schedule after the city implemented new water restrictions Friday.
The new restrictions come after the State Water Resources Control Board issued an emergency regulation in late May, calling on cities across the state to implement level 2 of their water contingency plans in order to reduce their water consumption by 20%.
“The severity of the current drought requires additional conservation actions from urban water suppliers, residents, and the commercial, industrial, and institutional sectors,” the Board wrote in their emergency regulation.
New data released Thursday by the United States Drought Monitor put the capital region at the level of “extreme drought.”
In compliance with the emergency regulation, West Sacramento has made its watering schedule permanent. The watering schedule allows odd-number addresses to water lawns and gardens on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and even-number addresses can water on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
Residents may not water between the hours of 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.
By comparison, the city of Sacramento’s watering schedule allows residents to water two times per week — also only in the early morning or late evening — from March to October, also based on their address number.
Beyond the new watering schedule, West Sacramento has implemented other measures in an attempt to reduce the city’s water use by 20%.
The city is calling on residents to fix faulty sprinklers within seven days, and to refrain from using hoses on driveways or sidewalks. Residents are also asked to use pool covers.
Finally, city officials are urging restaurants to only serve water upon request.
