Latest election tally: Jim Cooper, Thien Ho maintain lead in Sacramento sheriff, DA’s races

Newly released vote totals show the race for Sacramento sheriff continues with Assemblyman Jim Cooper outpacing Undersheriff Jim Barnes 56% to 44%, while Thien Ho is still leading over reform challenger Alana Mathews with a 59% to 41% margin.

The latest tallies from Tuesday’s primary election show Cooper holding essentially the same percentage lead he had with the initial release of vote tallies Tuesday. On Friday afternoon, he was leading Barnes by 18,681 votes out of 162,523 counted so far.

Ho also maintained his lead over Mathews, with 27,457 more votes out of 155,829 counted so far.

County elections officials said about 88,776 unprocessed ballots remain.

Cooper and Ho both expressed optimism after the polls closed Tuesday that they would prevail, and both said this week that they are moving forward with plans for how they will manage their respective offices if they win out.
