Sacramento election results show runoffs for 2 council seats while 1 holds on to winning margin
While two Sacramento City Council races will go to a November general election, one candidate is “cautiously optimistic” she could avoid a runoff.
Longtime Natomas Unified School Board member Lisa Kaplan had 50.47% of the vote as of Friday — higher than the 50.01% needed to avoid a general election for the North Natomas seat on the City Council. But more votes still need to be counted, so Kaplan is not yet declaring victory.
“I am so thankful to my team and every voter who believed in me and I think every vote deserves to be counted,” Kaplan said. “I remain cautiously optimistic.”
If the race does go to a November runoff, Kaplan will face realtor Alyssa Lozano, who has so far received 26% of the vote. LGBTQ advocate Nate Pelczar, received about 20% of the vote, and likely will not advance to the runoff.
Councilwoman Angelique Ashby held the District 1 seat for more than 12 years, but is leaving in order to run for State Senate. She endorsed Pelczar.
The race to represent District 3, which includes South Natomas and Northgate/Gardenland, appears likely to go to a runoff between Ashby’s chief of staff Karina Talamantes and youth nonprofit founder Michael Lynch. Talamantes has received 48.9% of the vote, while Lynch has received about 41%.
District 5, which includes Oak Park and parts of south Sacramento, will go to a runoff between homeless activist Caity Maple and Active Transportation Commission member Tamiko Heim. Maple received 38.6% of the vote, while Heim received 36.9%.
Sacramento County plans to release the next batch of results on Tuesday.
