Sacramento-area’s Steve Sax on his son’s death: ‘He is and always will be my hero’

West Sacramento native and retired MLB player Steve Sax posted on social media Sunday morning about the his son, Capt. John Sax, who died Wednesday in a Marine aircraft crash in Southern California.

Steve Sax said on Instagram that John “loved to serve his country” and was an “amazing” husband and father in an Instagram post that featured a picture of his son in uniform.

“He is and always will be my hero,” Sax wrote.

Capt. John Jeremy Sax, 33, who grew up in the Sacramento area, was one of five Marines who died June 8 in the desert region of Glamis while piloting an Osprey. Also killed in the crash were Capt. Nicholas P. Losapio, 31; Cpl. Nicholas E. Carlson, 21; Cpl. Seth D. Rasmuson, 21; and Lance Cpl. Evan A. Strickland, 19.

Steve Sax, who won two championships with the Los Angeles Dodgers, added in his post that he will be taking some time off from his longform podcast, “Sax in the Morning.”

“Until then, I want to thank you for allowing us this time and space to mourn, process and grieve privately,” he wrote.
