Gas on the decline? Check out this interactive graph to compare prices in Sacramento
After months of climbing gasoline prices, drivers in Sacramento may be feeling some relief at the pump as the average gas for prices begin to steadily drop.
The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel in the Sacramento area on Friday was $6.04, four cents lower than Thursday’s average, according to the American Automobile Association. The capital region last broke a record for gas June 13 at $6.44 per gallon.
This graph shows gas price fluctuation this year in Sacramento County and surrounding areas.
For the county, which differs slightly from the larger region, gas prices most recently peaked at $6.42 a gallon, which lasted from June 11 to 14.
In California, gas prices remain to be some of the highest in the country. The state average was $6.14 on Friday, which is about a quarter less than last month’s average.
Could prices remain low?
The primary reason for the dip in prices is due to lower demand at the pump, AAA spokesman Aldo Vazquez said. Fewer people have fueled up over the past two weeks.
“Economic fears of a potential global recession leading to less demand for oil dropped the price,” Vazquez wrote in an email.
But are these prices here to stay?
Head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, Patrick De Haan, said that gas prices may continue to decline for the next two or three weeks — so long as oil prices “don’t reverse back” or shoot back up.
And despite the more expensive summer blend for fuel, prices have been falling across the country — at least for now. The blend, which is used for environmental reasons, tacks on an additional six or seven cents per gallon.
However, the long summer driving season could put an end to this drop.
“But July is typically the heaviest month for demand as more Americans hit the road, so this trend of falling prices could be short-lived,” Vasquez wrote.
