Inmate dies in hospital hours after compassionate release from Sacramento County Main Jail
An inmate died in a Sacramento hospital early Friday morning, a few hours after being released from Sacramento County jail custody by a judge on a “compassionate release,” according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.
The 47-year-old man died from a pre-existing medical condition that was not related to COVID-19, Sgt. Rod Grassmann said in a news release Tuesday evening. The condition included heart failure and multiple organ failure.
The inmate was booked at the Sacramento County Main Jail on April 7 for multiple warrants for narcotics charges, according to Grassmann, and was on probation for those charges.
The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office was notified of the “compassionate release” and death of the inmate, Grassmann said. Per policies and state law, the Sheriff’s Office will conduct a thorough inmate death investigation.
Grassmann said no foul play is suspected.
