What’s being built at H and Sixth in Sacramento? Here’s what is planned for the tower
A soon-to-be courthouse in downtown Sacramento — surrounded by towering construction cranes and structured with new windows and concrete — will eventually be added to the capital’s short list of high-rise buildings.
A Reddit user recently posted a picture to r/Sacramento Reddit forum of a tall building under construction, asking if anyone had information about what it will be. The post had more than 150 “upvotes” and nearly 70 comments.
Here’s what we know:
Positioned on the northwest corner of the intersection of H and Sixth streets, Sacramento County’s new criminal courthouse will replace the existing Gordon D. Schaber Sacramento County Courthouse in Alkali Flat at 720 Ninth St., California Judicial Branch wrote on its website.
Constructed by Clark Construction Group, LLC, the more than $500 million construction project began in November 2020. Once the 18-story high building is completed, the Gordon D. Schaber Courthouse will permanently close its doors and the Judicial Council of California will look into selling the property.
“The facility is very overcrowded and it lacks many significant features that are needed to safely function as a criminal courthouse,” the California Judicial Branch wrote on its website.
Constructed in 1965, The Gordon D. Schaber Sacramento County Courthouse includes administrative offices and 44 courtrooms along with general civil and criminal case processing units, according to its website.
The new courthouse will include 53 courtrooms, 70 basement parking spaces and several types of security systems, Clark Construction wrote on its website.
It’s 18 stories and 543,437 square feet.
The site for Sacramento County’s new courthouse was secured in October 2014. However, the project was delayed because of California’s fiscal crisis and cuts in its court construction funds.
The project is projected to be complete by November 2023.
